the STOLEN GARMENT began developing its 21SS collection with an image of a tranquil resort. As the collection developed, however, the image became disrupted by a series of mysterious phone calls to the company’s rep number. Like an uninvited guest to a peaceful retreat, the voices on the other side of the phone inquired about adult products, knock-off viagras, where to buy them and how to use them. The disturbances caused by what appears to be a case of identity theft led to the juxtaposition of the image of tranquil space on one hand and the loud graphic elements found in subway leaflets and spam mails on the other. The collection consists primarily of relaxed silhouettes as seen in the comfy trousers with rubber-band waist, relaxed mac-coat, and oversized long field jacket, and uses reinterpretations of the mailman uniform’s silhouettes and details. Gym sacs and mini bags made with rope and jacquard fabric, striped beach bags with rope and fringe details, and belts with rope and metal hardware complete the brighter basic look. Other accessories include ballcaps embellished with 28mm eyelets, gathered tulle and hand-stitched labels. The sporty resort-wear collection is based on the reinterpretation of the uniform of mailmen a deliverer of goods and messages and appropriates iconographies of scam/spam mail as well as string-tie envelopes. Repurposed as ornamental details made with chamude, the string-tie envelopes’ eyelet buttons punctuate the relaxed looks, while the graphic motifs derived from adult products, scam mails and subway leaflets were digitally printed onto jersey pieces as their counterparts. 21SS collection uses playful color schemes befitting contemporary resort-wear and envisions the upcoming spring and summer.
